Entièrement entouré de murs fortifiés, Saint Paul de Vence possède un seul accès parfaitement maintenu et expose encore aujourd’hui son canon d’origine: Le canon Lacan (portant le nom du Capitaine qui défendit Saint Paul des attaques ennemies) utilisé dans diverses batailles et qui semble avoir réussi à protéger ce magnifique bourg des continuelles attaques provenant aussi bien de l’arrière-pays que de la mer.

Même s’il n’existe pas d’informations exactes sur les origines de ce centre historique, on a trouvé des traces d’une implantation Ligurienne, puis Romaine, pour enfin se faire connaître sous le nom de San Paolo après le XII siècle.

De l’ancien château, il ne reste plus que la haute tour (le Donjon), aujourd’hui siège de la Mairie. Monuments et curiosités La Fontaine (monument historique) construite en 1850, est le point de rendez-vous du village, comme par le passé, où se retrouvaient les artistes, les acteurs de cinéma et les gens célèbres du monde entier.

Sur la petite place, à l’entrée du village, se disputent des parties de “Pétanque” (jeux de boules typique) fameuses à travers le Monde: beaucoup de célèbrités passées ont joué sur cette place et y jouent encore.

La Fondation Marguerite et Aimé Maeght est un exemple unique de fondation privée en Europe. Cet ensemble architectural a été entièrement conçu et financé par Aimé et Marguerite Maeght pour présenter l'art moderne et contemporain.

History of Saint Paul de Vence

Even before entering inside the ramparts of this fortified village, Saint Paul de Vence lures and welcomes you as you approach by the beautiful, winding road leading up the hill. En route you catch your first glimpse of this quaint, perched village. Securely surrounded by fortified walls, Saint Paul de Vence has only one point of entry, which has been perfectly maintained through the years and still possesses one of its original canons. The Lacan cannon (bearing the name of the Captain who defended the town from enemy attacks) served in many battles, managing to defend this beautiful village from invasions by land and sea. Even if precise information regarding the origins of this historic centre is not known, relics from both Ligurian and Roman settlements have been discovered. The town was known as San Paolo from the 12^th century. Of the old castle only the high tower ‘le Donjon’ remains and today serves as the town hall.

Monuments and places of interest

The fountain (a listed historic monument) was built in 1850, and is a well-known, village meeting point. In the past artists, movie stars and celebrities from around the world used to meet here. On the tiny square by the entrance to the town locals, as well as well-known personalities, such as Yves Montand, gather to play pétanque - a traditional game of boules. The Fondation Marguerite et Aimé Maeght is one of the finest and most unique examples of a private foundation in Europe. This extraordinary architectural ensemble was entirely conceived and financed by Aimé and Marguerite Maeght to display modern and contemporary art.

Storia di Saint Paul de Vence

Il villaggio dona il benvenuto già fuori delle mura dove dall’alto della sua collina, si presenta con tutta la sua bellezza e particolarità. Interamente circondato da mura fortificate, Saint Paul de Vence presenta un unico accesso perfettamente mantenuto e munito ancora oggi del suo cannone. Il celebre cannone Lacan (chiamato così dal nome del Capitano che difese Saint Paul dall’attacco dei nemici) fu utilizzato in varie battaglie e sembra che sia riuscito a proteggere questo magnifico borgo dai continui attacchi provenienti sia dall’entroterra che dal mare.

Non si hanno notizie certe sulle origini di questo centro storico, probabilmente sul luogo si trovava un insediamento ligure divenuto poi romano e conosciuto con il nome di San Paolo solo dopo il XII° secolo. Dell’antico castello, rimane solo l’alta torre (il Donjon) oggi sede del Municipio.

Monumenti e curiosità

La Fontana (monumento storico) è stata costruita nel 1.850 e serve come punto d’incontro del villaggio, come lo era anni fa per attori, artisti e personaggi famosi di tutto il mondo. Nella piazzetta subito fuori delle mura, c’è la pista delle “Pétanque” (gioco delle bocce) che risulta essere la pista da bocce più celebre del mondo: tutti i personaggi celebri passati da queste parti, hanno giocato in questa piccola piazza.
