Île Sainte-Marguerite

At just fifteen minutes of ferry ride from Cannes, Sainte-Marguerite combines nature and culture and is the larger of the two islands, with 22 kilometers of hiking trails. There are 152 hectares of forest and exceptional flora and fauna as well as the Fort Royal, a former prison containing the cell of Alexandre Dumas’ legendary Man in the Iron Mask which is open to visitors. The Maritime Museum is also not to be missed; sheltered within a fortified enclosure, it offers visitors an insight into the area's history. The island’s Étang du Batéguier, where seawater mixes with fresh water, is home to a migratory bird reserve and on the sea side, Posidonia forms beautiful underwater ‘meadows’, a refuge for aquatic wildlife. Île Ste-Marguerite is beautiful, and large enough for visitors to find seclusion by following the trails that lead away from the congested port, through the Aleppo pines and woods of evergreen oak that are so thick they cast a sepulchral gloom. The western end is the most accessible, but the lagoon here is brackish, so the best places to swim are along the rocky southern shore, reached most easily along the allée des Eucalyptus. The channel between Ste-Marguerite and St-Honorat is, however, a popular anchorage for yachts, so you’re unlikely to find solitude.

Île Saint-Honorat

Sainte-Marguerite’s smaller neighbour, Saint-Honorat is just 1,500 meters long and 400 meters wide, predominantly covered by a forest of umbrella pines and vineyards, and home to an active community of monks since its namesake and patron founded a monastery here in 410 AD. Soak up the breathtaking views from the 15^th century fortress (renovated by Viollet Le Duc) in the 19^th century and enjoy a peaceful moment in the majestic Abbaye de Lérins. You can also visit the monastery’s shop and buy wine produced on the island, as well as honey, herbs, olive oil and a number of liqueurs. The monastery hosts annual retreats for those in search of spirituality or calm, while the abbey offers guided tours on various themes. The island’s restaurant, La Tonnelle, is the perfect place for a lazy lunch with a view of the sea (there are no bars, hotels or cars).

Леринские острова – остров Святой Маргариты (Ile Sainte-Marguerite) и остров Святого Онора (Ile Saint-Honorat) - расположены в море рядом с французским городом Канны и их можно назвать одной из самых интересных достопримечательностей этих мест. Остров Святой Маргариты известен прежде всего своим Королевским фортом (форт «Рояль») XVII века, который построен на крутом скалистом берегу и «смотрит» прямо на Канны – по морю между ними, кажется, рукой подать (менее километра). Многочисленные туристы отправляются на этот остров, чтобы увидеть тюрьму, в которой 11 лет (с 1687 по 1698 год) содержался один из самых загадочных узников в мировой и французской истории – «Человек в железной маске», чьё подлинное имя, несмотря на все попытки докопаться до истины, так и осталось не известным. На острове святой Маргариты находится Морской музей. Согласно многочисленным легендам в замке на этом острове был заточен узник в железной маске. В музее представлены коллекции археологических находок: остатки судов, которые потерпели крушение, фрески тюремного художника Жана Ле Гака. На большой террасе с видом на море иногда проходят временные фотовыставки. Остров Святого Онора (Сент-Онора), меньший из двух обитаемых Леринских островов, «прячется» за островом Святой Маргариты, плыть до него на пароме на несколько минут дольше. На Сент-Онора расположено древнейшее Леринское аббатство. Каждый из Леринских островов – это своеобразный, обособленный от материка микромир, красивейшая природа (острова покрыты пышными соснами - пиниями, магнолиями, зарослями эвкалипта и других южных растений) и совершенно непередаваемая атмосфера «средиземноморского баунти». Если вы спросите, какой из двух островов лучше – я вряд ли смогу ответить на этот вопрос, потому что они в чем-то похожи, но при этом совершенно разные. Далеко не все туристы, путешествующие по Лазурному берегу и останавливающиеся в Каннах, доезжают, точнее, доплывают до островов, и совершенно зря. Поэтому я решила сделать две статьи о каждом из Леринских островов с фото и подробной информацией.

Как добраться из Канн до Леринских островов:

Из Старого порта Канн в течение дня с интервалом примерно час-два на острова Сент-Маргарит (Святой Маргариты) и Сент-Онора отправляются паромы. Время в пути: от 15 до 25 минут
