One of the prettiest large towns in France, a seductive mix of leafy avenues, narrow streets of mellow-stone 15^th-17^th-century townhouses, squares and beautiful churches. The foundations are Roman but the atmosphere is smart and contemporary.

Aix-en-Provence is the city of art, and a city of light and activity. Aix is also a home of art schools and several universities, including some American, attracting a youthful population that sparks the atmosphere.

Aix is also ancient: a Celtic-Ligurian capital from the 3rd century BC was pushed aside for the founding of Aix in 122 BC, as Aquae Sextiae.

For pronunciation, you pronounce the "x", so Aix sounds like ex, as in "X marks the spot". On road signs, the name is shortened into Aix-en-Pce.

The center of Aix is the old town (vieille ville), ringed by a circle of boulevards and squares. It's a small-enough area to explore by foot, but there's way too much to see in one or two days. The medieval Aix was protected by a wall with 39 towers. Today only the 14^th century "Tourreluquo" tower remains, at the northwest corner of the town.

Cours Mirabeau is the center of the center, and the heart of Aix. The Cours Mirabeau is a beautiful tree-lined avenue, with one side lined with wonderful terrace cafés and bookshops. If you sit at only one French sidewalk café outside of Paris, it should be here, where the air is warm, the light sublime and the sidewalk alive. Large plane trees overhang the length of the avenue, giving day-long shade on hot summer days. Some of the more famous cafés are: Le Grillon, Les Deux Garçons, La Belle Epoque and Le Café du Cours.

For breakfast in Aix, we buy spinach quiches and mushroom quiches at a shop low on the Cours Mirabeau, across from the cafés, and have them with our "grandes crèmes" at Les Deux Garcons.

The old town of Aix is packed with shops, markets, museums, religious and architectural sites and historical sites. The terrace cafés on the Place des Précheurs (by the flower market) attract many of the younger locals, with lower prices than those on the Cours Mirabeau.

The Quartier Mazarin (Mazarin District) is the area south of the Cours Mirabeau. This area of 17th-century town houses ("hôtels particuliers") was built in 1646-51 by the Archbishop Mazarin. The Granet Museum, Paul Arbaud Museum and the 13th-century Eglise St-Jean-de-Malte are in the Quartier Mazarin.

The "Thermes Sextius" (Sextius Baths) in the northwest corner of the town, along the Bvd Jean Jaurès, are 18th-century hot-water baths set in a large tree-shaded park (closed for extensive renovation, 1996-97). This is near the site of original Roman baths, which were large enough to attract visitors to Aquae Sextiae 2000 years ago.

City of Fountains: Aix-en-Provence is full of fountains. Everywhere, throughout the town, fountains big and small bubble and spray and splash.

The Cours Mirabeau has some of the finest: The great fountain (1860) at La Rotonde, in the Place Général de Gaulle at the bottom end of the "cours", spraying up into the sunlight. The Fountain of 9 Cannons (1691), half way up, bubbles away in the shade. Another block up the "cours" is the moss-covered hot-water fountain dating back to 1734, although the 35°C (93°F) spring has been enjoyed for its healing properties for 2000 years. King René's Fountain, at the top of the "cours" was built in the 19^th century; the statue is of Roi René holding a bunch of Muscat grapes, which the good king introduced into Provence.

The lovely Fontaine des Quatre Dauphins at the Place des Quatre Dauphins, in the Mazarin district, was built in 1667 by Jean-Claude Rambot.

Markets

Main Market - Mon, Tue, Thur, Sat. The main market by the Palais de Justice is a big affair of fresh produce and food, bric-à-brac and flea-market. The flower market is on the Place de Verdun and Place des Prêcheurs, by the Ste-Madeleine church. The clothing market that used to be around the old prison is now along the "other side" of the Cours Mirabeau. The old prison, smack in the center of town, was rebuilt as an administrative building [1996-97].

Food Market. A daily market with food and fresh produce is held in the Place Richelme, between the post office and the old grain market.

Flower Market. During the three market days, a colorful flower market is held at the Place de l'Hotel de Ville.

Don't miss the studio of Cézanne (9 avenue Paul Cézanne, Aix-en-Provence; +33 4 42 21 06 53; www.atelier-cezanne.com), laid out much as he left it when he died in 1906. Musée Granet (Place Saint Jean de Malte, Aix-en-Provence; 00 33 4 42 52 88 32; www.museegranet-aixenprovence.fr; open Tue-Sun) has an excellent collection of paintings.

Aix-en-Provence (in provenzale: Ais de Provença secondo la norma classica o Ais de Prouvènço secondo la norma mistraliana) è una città del sud della Francia situata nel dipartimento delle Bocche del Rodano, nella regione della Provenza-Alpi-Costa Azzurra, sede di sottoprefettura.

Geografia

È situata in una pianura percorsa dal fiume Arc, dalla cui sponda destra dista circa due chilometri. La città è situata su un leggero pendio volto a sud, in prossimità delle prime colline che circondano la montagna Sainte-Victoire.

Aix è ben collegata: si trova a 20 minuti da Marsiglia, a 30 minuti dalle spiagge, a 2 ore e mezza dalle piste da sci, a 15 minuti dall'Aeroporto di Marsiglia-Provence e a circa 3 ore da Parigi tramite TGV.

Storia

Aix (Aquae Sextiae) venne fondata nel 123 a.C. dal console romano C. Sestio Calvo, da cui prende il nome. Nel 102 a.C. nelle sue vicinanze si svolse la battaglia di Aquae Sextiae, in cui i Romani, sotto la guida di Gaio Mario, sconfissero i Teutoni che, con i Cimbri, erano in procinto di varcare le Alpi per giungere in Italia. Nel IV secolo fu capitale della provincia romana di Narbonense Seconda (Narbonensis Secunda).

Fu occupata dai Visigoti nel 477 e nel secolo successivo venne ripetutamente saccheggiata dai Franchi e dai Longobardi. Nel 731 fu occupata dai Saraceni.

Durante il Medio Evo fu la capitale della contea della Provenza e raggiunse l'apice del suo sviluppo solo dopo il XII secolo, quando, sotto i casati degli Aragonesi e degli Angioini, si trasformò in un centro artistico e culturale. Con il resto della Provenza, entrò a far parte del regno di Francia nel 1487. Nel 1501 Luigi XIII stabilì in Aix il Parlamento della Provenza, che durò fino alla rivoluzione francese nel 1789. Nel XVII e XVIII secolo la città fu sede della generalità della Provenza.

Monumenti e luoghi caratteristici

Il Corso Mirabeau, un largo viale alberato su cui si affacciano abitazioni con ricche decorazioni, è uno dei punti principali di riferimento della città, dividendola in due parti. La città nuova si estende verso sud e ovest, mentre la città vecchia, con le sue vie irregolari e le vecchie mura che risalgono dai secoli XVI, XVII e XVIII secolo, sta al nord.

Aix è un centro studentesco importante, essendo la sede delle facoltà di legge e di lettere dell'università di Provenza, Aix-Marsiglia. Molti piccoli appartamenti della città vecchia sono adibiti ad alloggi per studenti, mentre la parte nuova della città offre strutture di studio e di alloggio attorno alle sedi dell'università. La vita notturna è molto movimentata, soprattutto nei pressi della Rue de la Verrerie.

La Cattedrale di Aix (XI/XIII secolo) ha una facciata che espone un ricco portale gotico.

La chiesa di Saint-Jean-de-Malte, risalente al XIII secolo, contiene alcuni dipinti importanti.

L'Hotel de Ville, tuttora sede del municipio della città, è una costruzione in stile classico risalente alla metà del XVII secolo, che domina una caratteristica piazza quadrata, ancora sede di un pittoresco mercato dei fiori. Contiene alcune pregiati ornamenti in legno scolpito e vi è ospitata una grande biblioteca che include molti manoscritti importanti. Il Trianon d'Aix, o Pavillon de Vendôme, palazzina di stile rinascimentale disegnata dagli architetti Antoine Matisse e Pierre Papillon per conto di Cesare di Borbone-Vendôme, duca di Vendôme nel 1665, è circondata da un piccolo giardino alla francese. Esistono diverse sorgenti termali, notevoli per la loro temperatura e per contenere carbonati di calcio e acido carbonico. Le terme pubbliche furono costruite nel 1705 vicino al luogo delle terme romane di Sextius, di cui rimangono ancora resti.

Nella Chiesa della Madeleine si trova lo scomparto centrale del Trittico dell'Annunciazione, capolavoro attribuito a Barthélemy d'Eyck.
